Creata da Robert Doherty, Carl Beverly e Sarah Timberman, Elementary ha come protagonisti Jonny Lee Miller (Sherlock Holmes) e Lucy Liu (Joan Watson). Gli altri membri fissi del cast sono Aidan Quinn (Capitano Thomas Gregson), Jon Michael Hill (Detective Marcus Bell) e Desmond Harrington (Michael). Nella serie è apparsa anche Natalie Dormer nel ruolo della nemesi di Holmes, Moriarty.
